What is a warranty?

A warranty is a voluntary commitment from a business to assume responsibility for a product or service for a specified period. The business determines the length and terms of the warranty, including which defects it covers and which circumstances are excluded.
Warranty protection varies between businesses and products. The written terms are therefore important when determining whether the business must repair or replace the product, redo the service, reduce the price, or provide another remedy.
During the warranty period, the business generally has to show that the defect was caused by something excluded from the warranty, such as an accident or improper use.
Warranties and statutory consumer rights
A warranty supplements your rights under Swedish consumer law. It does not replace or limit those rights.
When you purchase goods from a business, you generally have three years to report an original defect. For services, the time limit is normally three years. It may be ten years for work performed on land, buildings, or other fixed property.
You may therefore have a valid claim even after the warranty has expired. Whether the business is responsible depends on the type of defect, when it appeared, and the evidence available.
When a business rejects your warranty claim
A business may reject a claim because it considers the defect normal wear and tear, accidental damage, improper use, or an issue outside the warranty period. A rejection does not necessarily mean that the business is correct.
Save the warranty terms, receipt, agreement, correspondence, photographs, and any technical reports. Written documentation makes it easier to assess the claim and show what happened.
Our lawyers review the warranty terms and relevant consumer protection rules. We also help you formulate your demands and communicate with the business when you disagree about responsibility.
