Are you aware of your consumer rights?

As a consumer, you have rights when purchasing goods and services. Consumer laws protect you by regulating aspects such as complaints, warranties, and safeguards against misleading advertising or unfair contract terms. These laws ensure fair treatment in your dealings with businesses.

What consumer laws offer you

Purchases of goods and services
You have the right to receive accurate information about products, prices, and terms when making a purchase. Businesses are required to provide clear and truthful information, as well as a written confirmation of the purchase, either digitally or in print.

Complaints and warranties
If a product is faulty, it’s your right as a consumer to file a complaint. The complaint period lasts for three years from the purchase date, but you have to notify the seller of the defect within a reasonable time. Some defects may appear immediately, while others might take time to become noticeable. Many products also come with a warranty that provides additional protection beyond your right to complain.

Right of withdrawal
For purchases made remotely, such as online or over the phone, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal under The Act on Distance Contracts. This allows you to cancel the purchase and get a refund if you notify the seller within 14 days of receiving the item.

Unfair contract terms
Consumer protection laws guard against unreasonable contract terms that excessively favor the business or mislead the consumer. If a contract term is deemed unfair, it can be invalidated.

Marketing
Businesses must follow strict marketing regulations. For example, deceptive and aggressive advertising is prohibited. As a consumer, you’re entitled to clear and accurate information in all advertising, and businesses cannot use misleading marketing to coerce you into purchases.
