What to do after a traffic accident

What you do immediately after the accident can affect both your safety and a future insurance claim. Call 112 if anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger.
You should also:
- seek medical attention and make sure your symptoms are documented
- photograph the scene, the vehicles, and any visible injuries
- record the vehicles’ registration and insurance details
- obtain contact information from witnesses
- report the accident to the insurance company as soon as possible.
Keep receipts, medical certificates, records of time away from work, and other documents showing how the accident has affected you.
Reporting an injury to the insurance company
Personal injuries caused by a traffic accident are generally reported to the motor liability insurer for the vehicle involved. Drivers and passengers may be entitled to compensation, as may pedestrians and cyclists who were struck by a vehicle.
Other insurance policies may also apply, including personal accident insurance or coverage provided through your employer. You may therefore need to report the same accident to more than one insurance company.
What compensation may be available?
The compensation available under Swedish law depends on the severity of the injury and its consequences. It may include compensation for:
- medical expenses and other necessary additional costs
- loss of income during your recovery
- pain and suffering during the acute recovery period
- permanent injuries or scarring
- lasting effects on your work or daily life
- loss of financial support following the death of a family member.
Each claim is assessed individually. Medical records, certificates, and financial documents are often central to the assessment.
If the insurance company denies your claim
An insurance company may deny a claim if it believes there is insufficient evidence connecting your symptoms to the accident. Disputes may also concern the severity of an injury or the amount of compensation offered.
A lawyer can review the decision, your medical records, and the other evidence. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to request reconsideration or have a personal injury issue reviewed by the Swedish Road Traffic Injuries Commission.
If the vehicle is unidentified or uninsured
Claims involving unidentified or uninsured vehicles may be handled by Swedish Motor Insurers. Document the accident carefully and report it to the police if an unidentified vehicle leaves the scene.
Suspected of an offense after an accident
A traffic accident may lead to a criminal investigation if there is a suspected traffic offense, such as careless driving, driving under the influence, or leaving the scene of an accident. Our lawyers explain the allegations and can represent you in dealings with the police, prosecutors, and courts.
