Apply for asylum
We have years of experience with migration cases and will help you apply for asylum.
If your safety is threatened in your home country and you need to flee, you can apply for asylum in Sweden. If you’re granted asylum, you’ll receive a residence permit in Sweden which gives you the right to both live and work here. The residence permit is only valid for a certain period. How long of a period that is depends on the reason why you’ve applied for asylum. If, on the other hand, your application is rejected, you have to either return to your home country, or appeal the decision. During the time of your appeal, you can usually stay in Sweden.
How to apply for asylum in Sweden
You have to be in Sweden or at the Swedish border when you apply for asylum. You can submit your application directly to the border police or to the Swedish Migration Agency’s application units in Gothenburg, Malmö or Stockholm. Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll be called to an asylum investigation. The Swedish Migration Agency will then review your case. And in some cases, you may need to give them additional information.
The Swedish Migration Agency can also decide that you need public counsel. This is simply a lawyer who will help you in your asylum application. You don’t have to pay for your public counsel. The cost for that is paid by the Swedish state. You are allowed to request a specific lawyer as public counsel. Otherwise the Swedish Migration Agency will assign one for you.
Your public counsel has to protect your rights and explain all parts of the asylum process clearly so that you’re aware of what’s happening in your case. They’ll help you throughout the entire process. If your application for asylum is rejected and you want to appeal the decision to the Migration Court or the Migration Court of Appeal, they’ll help you with that as well.
