Assault – Laws, penalties, and victim rights
One of the most common crimes in Sweden is assault, where a person intentionally causes another person bodily harm, pain, or illness. Assault can range in severity, from mild to aggravated, and includes physical violence such as hitting or kicking as well as psychological abuse. The level of violence and the circumstances surrounding the incident determine the type of punishment the perpetrator may receive and the support available to the victim.
Levels of assault and penalties
When a perpetrator is convicted of assault, the court assesses the severity of the crime. The penalty varies based on the seriousness of the offense.
- Minor assault (Ringa misshandel): Less serious cases, such as a light slap without significant injury. Punishable by fines or imprisonment for up to six months.
- Assault (Misshandel): Violence causing bodily harm, pain, or illness but without life-threatening or severe injuries. Punishable by imprisonment for up to two years.
- Aggravated assault (Grov misshandel): Severe and reckless violence intended to cause serious harm, potentially life-threatening. Examples include repeated violence or using dangerous objects. Punishable by imprisonment for at least one year and up to six years.
- Exceptionally gross assault (Synnerligen grov misshandel): Extremely severe violence involving weapons or actions causing permanent injuries. Punishable by imprisonment for at least five years and up to ten years.
Victims’ rights

You can also receive help by a counsel for an injured party, which is a lawyer appointed to help and support you during the legal process.
