What is a general power of attorney?

A general power of attorney grants an agent broad authority to perform legal acts in your name. You decide who may represent you, which matters the document covers, and what restrictions apply.
The agent may, for example, be authorized to:
- manage specified banking and payment matters
- enter into or terminate contracts
- represent you before businesses and government agencies
- manage claims and debts
- purchase, sell, or manage specified property
- receive documents and provide information on your behalf.
You will generally be bound by actions that the agent takes in your name and within the authority granted. The agent should therefore be someone you trust, and the document should not grant broader authority than necessary.
What should the document contain?
A general power of attorney should clearly identify:
- the person granting the authority
- the appointed agent
- the matters and transactions covered
- any excluded actions
- financial limits
- whether the agent may appoint a substitute
- when the authority begins
- whether it applies indefinitely or for a fixed period.
Some transactions may require more specific wording even when the document grants broad authority. Banks, government agencies, and other recipients may also require their own forms, original documents, or separate authorization procedures.
General and future powers of attorney
A general power of attorney is used when you want another person to represent you now, for example while you are living abroad or need ongoing assistance with financial and practical matters.
A future power of attorney is designed to take effect if you later become unable to manage the matters covered due to illness, mental disorder, weakened health, or a similar condition. Swedish law imposes specific formal requirements on future powers of attorney.
A general power of attorney should therefore not automatically be treated as a substitute for a future power of attorney. The documents serve different purposes and may need to be used together when planning for both current and future needs.
