How much is the ticket for speeding?
The cost of a speeding ticket depends on how fast you were driving and what the speed limit was on that particular road. Keep in mind that the amount can also vary depending on other circumstances.
| Violation | When speeding on roads with a limit of 50 km/h or lower | When speeding on roads with a limit of 50 km/h or higher |
|---|---|---|
| 1-10 km/h | SEK 2 000 | SEK 1 500 |
| 11-15 km/h | SEK 2 400 | SEK 2 000 |
| 16-20 km/h | SEK 2 800 | SEK 2 400 |
| 21-25 km/h | SEK 3 200 | SEK 2 800 |
| 26-30 km/h | SEK 3 600 | SEK 3 200 |
| 31-35 km/h | SEK 4 000 | SEK 3 600 |
| 36+ km/h | SEK 4 000 | SEK 4 000 |
When do you risk having your driver’s license revoked?
A driver’s license can be revoked in cases of serious speeding violations.
You normally risk having your driver’s license revoked if you’re caught driving:
- 31 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a speed limit of 30–50 km/h
- 41 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a speed limit of 70 km/h or higher
- Repeated speeding offenses
The revocation period is usually between 2 and 12 months.
Is there any “tolerance” for speeding?
There is no fixed tolerance threshold in the law.
However, the police often apply a small margin, but you shouldn’t rely on being able to avoid a ticket even for minor violations.
What happens when you’re stopped by the police?
When you are stopped for speeding, you have the right to:
- Be informed of the recorded speed
- See the result from the measuring equipment
- Ask questions about how the measurement was carried out
You’re not required to admit to an offense on the spot when the police has stopped you.
Can you appeal a speeding ticket or a revoked driver’s license?
Yes, absolutely. When you file an appeal, it’s important that your appeal is correctly formulated.
A ticket is appealed to the district court.
A revoked driver’s license is appealed to the administrative court after a decision by the Swedish Transport Agency.
Common mistakes in speeding cases
Many people weaken their case by, for example:
- Admitting to speeding immediately
- Failing to document the incident
- Waiting too long to appeal
- Missing important deadlines
If you handle the matter correctly, you can increase your chances of influencing the outcome if you believe you weren’t speeding.
