When you apply for a residence permit or asylum<\/a> in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency<\/a> may decide that you need a public counsel. That’s a lawyer who assists you with your application and communication with the Migration Agency. The counsel supports you throughout the process, ensuring your rights are respected. They help you compile the necessary information for your application, explain the steps in the process, and assist in appealing the decision if your application is denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does a it work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A public counsel must have a solid understanding of Swedish laws. They ensure your rights are respected, explain what’s happening, and assist you throughout the process. The Migration Agency typically assigns a lawyer to act as your public counsel. However, you can request a specific lawyer if you prefer someone who speaks your native language or someone you particularly trust. You can also request a male or female counsel, depending on your preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who pays for the counsel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even if you request a specific counsel, there’s no guarantee you’ll be assigned the one you choose. The Migration Agency considers your request but ultimately decides who’ll serve as your public counsel. Regardless of whether the Migration Agency selects your counsel or assigns the one you requested, the Swedish state covers the cost. You don’t need to pay for the assistance you receive with your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
