The Compulsory Psychiatric Care Act (LPT) is a Swedish law regulating the care of individuals with severe mental disorders who don’t voluntarily seek the treatment they require. The Compulsory Psychiatric Care Act applies to individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, severe depression, or other psychotic conditions requiring immediate care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danger and in need for care<\/strong>
Compulsory care is initiated when an individual poses a threat to themselves or others or when their health is critically endangered without treatment. This assessment must be made by a licensed physician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When voluntary care is insufficient<\/strong>
The Compulsory Psychiatric Care Act can only be applied if the individual refuses voluntary treatment. Voluntary care should always be prioritized when feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A physician conducts an initial evaluation of the individual\u2019s condition. If deemed necessary, a psychiatric specialist performs a more comprehensive assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Admission decision<\/strong>
    If the specialist determines that criteria according to The Compulsory Psychiatric Care Act are met, an admission decision is made. The individual is then admitted for care at a psychiatric facility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Duration of care and review<\/strong>
    Compulsory care continues until the individual no longer meets the criteria for needing the care. Regular reviews assess whether care should continue or if voluntary treatment is a viable option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
