But you can only do so if you meet certain conditions. Make sure you follow the correct procedure if your child gets sick during your vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-can-you-switch-your-vacation-to-temporary-parental-benefits\">When can you switch your vacation to temporary parental benefits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re only allowed to interrupt your vacation and claim temporary parental benefits if your child becomes ill\u00a0while in Sweden, another EU\/EEA country, or Switzerland. If your child gets sick, you also have to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact your employer and inform them that you wish to switch your vacation days for temporary parental benefits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Officially stop using your vacation days. You can&#8217;t receive both vacation pay and compensation for caring for your sick child for the same days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-outside-the-eu-eea-during-your-vacation\">If you\u2019re outside the EU\/EEA during your vacation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u00a0can&#8217;t switch vacation days to temporary parental benefits if you&#8217;re in a country\u00a0outside the EU\/EEA. However, if your child becomes sick\u00a0before\u00a0traveling, you can be allowed to claim compensation for caring for your sick child during your trip. In order to do so, you have to get approval from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forsakringskassan.se\/english\">F\u00f6rs\u00e4kringskassan<\/a>) before departing on your vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-follow-these-steps\">Follow these steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact your employer\u00a0as soon as possible\u2014preferably the same day your child gets sick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply for compensation\u00a0from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency digitally. You have to do it no later than\u00a090 days\u00a0after the first day your child was sick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your child is sick for more than a week, you&#8217;ll probably need a doctor\u2019s certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keep-in-mind\">Keep in mind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a\u00a0teacher with a vacation-based contract, the same rules apply. This means you&#8217;re allowed to switch your vacation days to temporary parental benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child is sick for longer periods (if the child for instance is hospitalized), there are special rules that allow unlimited days of temporary parental benefits with medical documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your\u00a0employer isn&#8217;t allowed to demand a doctor\u2019s note. However they can request proof from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency if they suspect your child wasn&#8217;t ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-to-the-vacation-days-you-initially-requested\">What happens to the vacation days you initially requested?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vacation days you switch to temporary parental benefits will be returned to your <a href=\"https:\/\/kliently.se\/en\/news\/how-many-vacation-days-do-you-earn-per-month-in-sweden\/\">vacation day<\/a> balance. For example, if you requested 20 vacation days and switch 5 of them to temporary parental benefits, you\u2019ll get those 5 vacation days back to use later.
